We launched in July 2016, but our story begins years ago. Aside from becoming a writer, one of my biggest dreams growing up was to own a shop. What would fill it, I never quite figured out. Gifts. Clothes. Crafts. Maybe all of the above. I dreamed that I’d one day have a place to sell the things I made and the things other people made that were useful and beautiful.
As I grew up this dream shifted, but the principle never did: I wanted to create. I wanted to support those who create. And I wanted to share them both.
I did this in various ways over the years—by selling on Etsy, by curating vintage, by starting a DIY blog that morphed into a space geared toward promoting the work of independent makers.
Along the way I began to learn more and more about conscious shopping. It’s one of those things most of us know, but close our eyes to. There was no aha moment. It was just a gradual understanding that most of the goods we Americans consume are simply not produced ethically. They either come with a sweatshop story or a major environmental impact, usually both. What’s more, they often don’t stay in our lives for long, and if they do, they don’t provide meaning. And once my eyes were opened to this, I couldn’t close them.
One day I realized—why not combine the two? My love of shopping small with my passion for conscious consumerism? Even though they’re at odds: shopping—creating, really, and being conscious—living with intent. But still, there had to be a way to make them work together.
It was kinda perfect. I love beautiful, inspiring stuff. I just do. But I also don’t love excess and exploitation. We shoppers are in a privileged position even to shop, why not do it with intent?
I am a crafter, writer, social media strategist, champion of the underdog, believer in mother nature.
Thankfully some wonderful friends and colleagues of mine share these same views (I knew I liked you guys!), not to mention bring loads of creative talents to the table.
We promise to promote you, shop owner, and to inform you, shopper. And of course to inspire you, conscious reader.
We believe that conscious living—shopping with intention, embracing creativity, and truly loving your belongings—should not only be attainable, but inspiring… that you don’t have to choose between ethics and creativity. Our mission is to empower shoppers to make intentional purchasing decisions, discover the items they truly want to buy, and connect with the people behind those products in order to live more socially + environmentally consciously.
