If you got the chance to check out our spring/summer lookbook, you’ve probably already heard about our latest member, Frisenvang! As you can see on their member page, Frisenvang is an organic yarn brand based in Denmark that works with small villages in the Andes to bring you beautiful, high quality alpaca yarn. The production of most yarns, like the production of most things, currently involves a lot of unsustainable practices (that we talked about in our sustainable yarn guide), so we’re really inspired by this company and their work in Peru.
While their yarns are not yet certified fair trade or organic (this is a long process for a company working with a village troubled by financial and educational barriers, and right now the main concern is providing proper wages), no chemicals are used in the production process. Marianne + her team work with the small villages in the Andes, ensuring them a living wage that is several times what industrial yarn producers provide.
Business is handled by Sofie, Jørn and Marianne based in Denmark, with strong support from Alvaro and Augusto, both living in Lima, Peru.
The green, purple, and blues are plant-dyed, and the more neutral colors are their natural hues.
The result is organic, natural or plant-dyed 100% baby alpaca yarn. When I first opened the package, I was surprised at how soft this alpaca yarn was, and would never want to go back to blends or non-organic varieties! They ship all over and have recently added USD to the page so you can see the cost of their products before adding to your cart.
