…And just like that, we’re at our 51st member! I know it’s been absolutely forever since we’ve done a member intro, so be sure to check out our entire ethical shopping page to see everyone we’ve added to our directory as of late. One of those new brands is UK and Bali based S A Y A, maker of recycled hair sticks created from salvaged root wood sourced from abandoned plantations in Indonesia. Needless to say, this brand is pretty fascinating, and their hair accessories are beautiful. So today we wanted to feature a few words from their founder Victoria, along with some photos she shared of their incredible products. If you’re looking for a completely unique, ethical holiday gift, let’s just say, this might be it!
Tell us a little about your brand and what makes it conscious:
My name is Victoria. I am from Oxford in the UK and I started S A Y A as a medium for exploration over a year ago now. My personal and professional background is all in the visual arts. I was inspired to start S A Y A because I wanted to establish a way I could create a direct link between giving back to the planet I love, whilst expressing my creativity.
Through S A Y A, we are creating excitement around issues we believe in. We hope to invite others to learn more and get involved with environmental and wildlife conservation. We aim to do this by creating things people treasure that also have stories behind them. Circular business models always made so much sense to me, here you can focus on how your materials are sourced, how they are made, what message you have and what impact you can create.
I have sought advice all along the way from NGOs in Indonesia. They have been so helpful and happy to look over any paperwork and documentation I needed to check or any questions I had. They assured me that I was approaching this in a good way and not creating any alternative negative impacts.
For now S A Y A is just myself and my boyfriend who has been a huge help and support. I have some wonderful people who help me on a freelance basis with a variety of aspects of the business. We are a growing family!
I am personally based between the UK but my network is mostly now in Bali. Production takes place here where we are working together with Balinese artisans to create our pieces. We are using salvaged root wood from old plantation sites in Indonesia, mainly Java where there is unfortunately huge amounts of deforested areas. By using this waste material, left behind by loggers, we are not adding to the huge logging industry across the world and able to tell stories about issues we care about… The well being of our rainforests!
We are collaborating with a local NGO who works with community forestry projects to aid reforestation issues at a grassroots level. This is what gets me really excited about starting this business and it is just the beginning!
Thanks to much to Victoria of S A Y A Designs for the insight on this innovative eco-friendly accessory brand. See her listing in our ethical shopping directory here + shop the full collection on her website. There you’ll find exactly what materials each hair stick is made of, how to use it (with guides for short, medium, and long hair), as well as a guide to its environmental impact.
Would I be the nerdiest if I ended this post with SOOOO COOOL!!!!? Because that’s how I feel about what S A Y A is doing.
